Hello everybody and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice, and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner.
Hello Ivan, how are you today? And where are you today?
Ivan:
I’m actually traveling. So we’re back to doing a little bit of travel. I spent last week with Jack Canfield’s Tribe, helping talk to people about how to scale their business. And that was a blast. And this week, I’m doing a Facebook live in Florida. So it’s good to actually be on the road finally.
Priscilla:
Yeah, that sounds nice. So who is our guest today?
Ivan:
Well, I have a friend who has been on already once, Robert Skrob. And Robert is a marketing expert. For more than 20 years, he’s helped 1000s of businesses attract and retain their best target customers. I love this – Robert’s superpower is simplification, simplifying your message to attract more customers. He’s worked with entrepreneurs in more than 100 business categories. And he specializes in helping businesses grow. And he certainly has helped BNI. And he’s done work with BNI for more than a year. And he is my co-author, along with Graham Weihmiller, for the book The Connector Effect. Robert, welcome to the BNI Podcast for your second time.
Robert:
Oh my goodness, I can’t believe after that last episode, I was really surprised that you would have me back. I mean, jeez.
Ivan:
Well, your episode went over really well. And on the last episode, we talked about why The Connector Effect was created and what is The Connector Effect. This time we’re going to talk about what is a Master Connector, which the book, The Connector Effect, talks about. What is a Master Connector? And how does becoming one help you grow your business?
Robert:
Yeah, thank you for that. Now Master Connectors are the individuals within every community that know the solution to every problem; they’ve got, you know, the people that can solve the problem and be able to get things done. Master Connectors naturally attract people to them, you know, both customers as well as people that need solutions. And so by establishing yourself as a Master Connector, it just makes business easier. It makes life more fun, because now people are coming to you rather than you having to chase people down or feel salesy or do a bunch of cold calls. Because people know you as the person that has all the answers.
And the fact is that there is no easier way to become a Master Connector than through your BNI chapter membership. Because your BNI chapter membership has so many referral business categories already filled, that, you know, becoming a Master Connector on your own is almost impossible, because having to fill each one of those slots would be terribly difficult trying to ensure that each person does what they say they’re going to do and they are somebody that you can trust to refer your friends family and your best customers to, that that BNI Chapter accelerates your growth to become a Master Connector so that you can give referrals and become the person that everybody knows and trusts as the person who can solve any problem.
Ivan:
Well, I want to unpack two things you said. One was, “It’s not salesy,” and that is so true. Look, sales are part of doing business and I get that, but isn’t it a lot easier to close a sale when you have a referral, when you’re connected to somebody from another source that trusts you both? It doesn’t feel salesy because it’s a referral. Wouldn’t you agree?
Robert:
Not only is it not salesy, but it’s more lucrative. People spend more with businesses that have been referred to them, than somebody that they just seek out on a on a search online or something. And so that by being the person who is referred, you’re going to be able to get more, not only you’re going to close them faster, but you’re also going to have a higher customer value than you’re trying to do other marketing approaches.
Ivan:
Yeah, absolutely true. The other thing is that, I don’t know if I ever told you this story; it’s kind of a historical thing, it wasn’t in The Connector Effect. But when I started BNI, I really wanted to be a connector. I mean, that was my focus, it was I wanted to connect people. Now, of course, this is before the internet, you know, it was buggy whip, horse and buggies days. And so what I literally did, was I mailed all my contacts and all my clients a letter through the snail mail, it was a two page letter, the first page was, “Hey, we know each other. I’m Ivan. I’m a consultant.” and it was on my company letterhead. And I said, “One of the things I like to do is to build relationships and connect people and attached is a single sheet of paper with the names of professions that you might have a need for. And if you do, just call me, and I’ll put you in touch with somebody who handles that.” And I didn’t put names of people next to the professions, Robert, because I wanted people to call me. And I wanted to make the introduction to the service provider, I wanted to be a connector. And ironically, I ended up building BNI, literally because of this letter that I would send out where I was constantly connecting people and giving referrals. So that was sort of the old school version of what you and I and Graham have talked about in this book, wouldn’t you agree?
Robert:
Yeah. And in fact, how difficult was it to try to assemble that list? And even though you had spent a long time assembling it….
Ivan:
I did it because of BNI. I actually had contacts, I had already started BNI, so I had some of those contacts in place. But what I wanted to do was to build BNI and look, I didn’t want to show up at a meeting without a referral. Okay, let’s be honest, I wanted to show up with legitimate referrals. And so I did it, I think I started doing it with the very first chapter. And then of course, as we opened up more chapters, I was able to fill in those spots. But yeah, that’s how I built the chapter that I started, which it’s still around today, the first chapter. It’s called the Founders Chapter after 36 years.
Robert:
Oh, my goodness. Well, that makes sense that you could do it with your BNI chapter, because trying to build and assemble that directory out on your own is almost impossible. With the chapter, with the BNI chapter, being able to walk in and become that Master Connector and be in a position to be able to build relationships with friends, family and your best clients, by giving them referrals that solve key problems in their life, to members of your BNI chapter, is an unbelievable, powerful benefit that you get from the very moment that you join your BNI chapter. And that would really be impossible without it.
Ivan:
It would and they were really the foundation of that second page. And then I added in other professions that weren’t necessarily in BNI, but that I had relationships with, but yeah, they were the baseline for me in that second page. And so let me ask you another question, how does BNI, in your opinion, accelerate your results to be a Master Connector? I think we’ve touched upon that a little, but do you have anything more?
Robert:
Yeah, the thing that we talked about when we were writing the book, I had the great honor of being able to come to your home and work with you on this. And it is the story that you told and I have been kicking myself the last several weeks for not including it in the book, but how most business for owners focus on trying to do 6000 things, and you need to do six things 1000 times.
And I think the real key about BNI and the thing that we did include in the book, there are just a few things to do, and that BNI gives you the practice of doing them. Being able to do weekly presentations, being able to do G.A.I.N.S exchange with one-to-ones, being able to pass referrals, being able to invite visitors, being able to participate in leadership, and then being able to show up at weekly meetings, those six things 1000 times, help make you a Master Connector and make life so much easier than any other marketing approach that you could possibly do.
Ivan:
Yeah, and I think sometimes entrepreneurs you know, they get tired of doing six things 1000 times so they keep chasing bright shiny objects, and that’s a mistake. If I have any superpower, whatsoever, as a business person, it’s that I’m a dog with a bone. And you know, I’ll do something over and over and over. And, you know, we’re on Podcast what, Priscilla, 700 and what?
Priscilla:

Ivan:
So that’s a dog with a bone mentality, you know, you’d keep putting it out there over and over again. And a lot of people don’t get that. You want to be a Master Connector, you’ve got to do this consistently. It’s that timed repetition in BNI of meeting weekly and doing certain things every week, that makes, I think, a really, really big difference.
Robert:
Well, the reason you’re building a business is to create a lifestyle for yourself and your family, and an asset that you can sell. You can make that as hard as you want to make it. And if you want to chase around bright shiny objects all day, and try different approaches every single month, go for it. But if you want to do it the easy way, and you want to build a business that creates a lifestyle for yourself and an asset for yourself to sell, then become a Master Connector through your BNI Chapter. Do six things 1000 times, and it will be the easiest, most rewarding way that you could have for growing a business and a life.
Ivan:
