Ivan Misner。
Priscilla:

Priscilla:
Hello, everybody, and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice, and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan, how are you today?
Ivan:
I am doing great Priscilla and you know, I miss the “How are you and where are you?” I do.
Priscilla:
I do, too.
Ivan:
You know, I travel all over the world and people come up to me and say, “Hello, Ivan, how are you and where are you?” So it’s a line that people have picked up all around the world. We’ll get back to it, though, as soon as we start traveling again.
Priscilla:
Okay, that sounds good. So what do you have in mind for us today?
Ivan:
So I received a message from a BNI member who was distraught, because he said he had no idea how to invite people to BNI online. And I was really surprised by that, because I thought it would be easier to invite people, not harder to invite people. And so to confirm that, or to find out if it was harder, I actually asked members on my social media, I sort of crowd sourced feedback. And I asked them if they thought it was easier or harder to invite people online and why. And Priscilla, virtually everyone said it was easier.
And so I want to talk about some of the ways it is easier. And I’m gonna quote some of the the crowd sourced comments from people all around the world, and what they said about why it was easier. And then I’ve got some closing thoughts, and I’m going to ask your opinion on it, as well. We’ll see when we get to the end. So here are some of the kinds of comments that I received.
When I asked, “Is it harder or more difficult to invite online?” Frasier said that it is more convenient and saves time. And Frasier also thanked BNI for its forward thinking by using the latest technology during this time period, Karen and many others said it’s easier because there’s no travel and no meal costs. So she said, “Our group is actually considering maintaining the online element in the future or possibly doing some hybrid.”
I think you know, as I mentioned in a previous podcast, the genie is out of the bag and I think we’re probably going to see some kind of hybrid. I’ll talk a little bit more about that at the end. Omar says it’s more convenient, definitely more convenient. He said he lives in an area with constant traffic jams and so the online platform is easier. Vicki said it’s not scary going to the meetings because of the virus issue. And, boy, I think that’s a big issue. People, you know, no one is going to want to go out and in most countries, you cannot go to a meeting with a lot of people and so because of the virus issue, it’s just not scary but you can still network. She also said that it’s great for anyone with childcare issues, that they can still do BNI online. Jamie said she thoroughly enjoyed her virtual meeting as a visitor. So here a visitor responded to my social media request. And she said she really enjoyed our virtual meeting as a visitor and thinks that this would be an incredible hybrid system down the road. Rachid said, it’s even easier to bring employees to the meeting. So if you’ve got people who work for you, bringing them to the online meeting is even easier. These are all of the different thoughts that have been given to me about it being easier.
And not one person, not one, said it’s harder to invite. Some people said they miss the face to face, the in-person, but not one person said it’s harder. Brenda said it’s definitely easier for a visitor come and it allows more flexibility. She said we’ve had visitors come to the meetings every single week since they transitioned to online. Mike said that people are struggling in business, and people need BNI more than ever. Yes, Mike, people need BNI more than ever. He said being online allows them to network during this time.
Very true. Petti says that being online will give more awareness to the BNI program. And I think that’s very true. I think when this is all over that BNI membership will actually increase substantially because of BNI online. Of course, the larger the organization, the more name recognition; the more name recognition, the easier it is for you to invite people to the organization because you’ve hit that tipping point in the creation of brand recognition. Sujata says that it’s easier for introverts. Now I love that comment, that if you feel at all like you’re an introvert, it’s easier to come to the online platform than it is if you’re an extrovert, so that was one I had not thought of – great, great point.
Kundun says it’s less of a time commitment. And he and others said the same thing, much less of a time commitment because you don’t have to, you know, drive there or get up early, get prepared, go drive there and drive back. Reetou says you can just log in without the pressure of dressing up and driving to the venue, which is similar to Kundun. Jeff said he has had 10 visitors since BNI Online – 10 visitors since they went to BNI Online. Charles said getting visitors is easy and they just inducted a new member through BNI Online. I think these are really great suggestions and I want to point out that I still love the in person meetings. But I definitely agree with the comments that I just shared that it is easier than ever to invite people. I want to mention some other episodes, some other podcasts on inviting people in a minute, but before I do, Priscilla, tell us what your chapter’s experience been.
Priscilla:
Thank you, Ivan. We have had two new members join since we went online, which is really encouraging, and we had a visitor last week that was quite interested, she might join. So that was great. As far as our president, his attitude is when we talk about how to invite, his attitude is not to share a lot of details about how much it costs and what all the requirements are in terms of attendance, and you know, all the details of BNI – but just to invite somebody to see if they enjoy the meeting, and if it feels like something rewarding and something they might want to get involved with. And then you kind of can tell them more about what it might cost in the future and what your requirements are.And I just want to add, there’s something else that wasn’t mentioned. But it was mentioned in my group, which is one of the advantages of the online meeting is the screen sharing aspect, so that people who have websites or have digital products to share with the other members, it’s very easy to do. Whereas, before it was kind of difficult and you had to hook up some kind of overhead projector and get there early and hope that it worked and so forth. And now you can just share what’s on your computer with your members.
Ivan:
Oh, that’s a great point. That’s one of those, I like to call it a BFO. I don’t know that I’ve used that expression on the podcast before – Blinding Flash of the Obvious.
Priscilla:
Yeah.
Ivan:
That’s a really good point, thanks. So one of the things that your president said that I agree 100% with, don’t overload people with information. And when I was inviting people in the early days of BNI and there was, you know, literally just 1,2,3,4 chapters. I would invite people and they’d say to me, you know, “Do you have a brochure?” I didn’t have anything, Priscilla, I opened 20 chapters of BNI with no printed material. Not one thing. People said, “You have to have something.” I said no, no, you have to experience a meeting, come to the meeting. And I wouldn’t give them a ton of information, I would just say, “Come to the meeting, you have to experience the meeting and be prepared to meet you know, 20 30, 40, 100 people depending on the size of your group, be prepared to meet a lot of people. And that was it. I did not have material, it made no difference.
As a matter of fact, I find that if you start giving people tons of information, they won’t even come to experience the meeting. And you’ve got to get people to come to experience the meeting, whether you’re talking about in person or online, as we’re talking right now, they’ve got experience the meeting. So I agree with your President.
Priscilla:
I have one more thing to say. Which is in this time that we’re going through right now with the isolation and you know, staying at home and so forth to be safe, you know, BNI helps with creating community, and it makes you feel connected to other people and even if your business is shut down during this period, you feel like you’re part of a business community and that when it does open up, you’ll have work ahead for you, that people will be looking for work for you. And that’s a great feeling in this time of socially isolating.
Ivan:
Yeah. Wow, you’re 2-and-0 Priscilla, those are two great points that nobody else brought up. So thank you for sharing those. I appreciate it.
So for those of you listening, I think the invitation process is really very similar to doing it in person. And so I want to give you some episodes of the BNI Podcast to go to that talk about inviting people. So here, there’s about five or six of them; six or seven of them, actually. Episode Number 633 – I’ve Invited Everyone I Know. I’ll make sure links go into this podcast so you can click on them. I’ve Invited Everyone I Know is the first podcast. Episode 572 – Focused Invite Days. Episode 541 – Inviting Visitors. Episode 486 – Inviting Visitors to Your Feature Presentation. Love that concept. Episode 458 – Inviting People – Good, Better, Best. And my personal favorites, Episode 541 – Inviting Visitors, which discusses the “we’re interviewing” technique that I talked about. And then the companion Episode 547 – Interviewing Prospective Members.
So these are great podcasts. Check these out. When the great pause is over, I like to call it the great pause rather than lockdown. When the great pause is over, I believe we will go back to in person meetings or some type of hybrid. Until then, health and safety are key issues and at this time, we don’t want people to go back to meeting in person until it is safe. As I’ve been saying throughout this situation, today more than ever, you need your network. BNI has invested heavily in making sure that the BNI platform is here for you. While others are at a loss for networking, BNI members can still generate referrals and support as you mentioned, Priscilla, and I urge you to go 100% in with the online platform until such time as it’s safe to consider our options. On a closing note, I recently heard that in the first month of BNI online alone, first month, according to BNI Connect, members passed and generated more than 1 billion, with a “B”, 1 billion US dollars worth of business, worth of referral business in the first month of BNI Online. Today, more than ever, you need BNI. Over to you Priscilla.
Priscilla:
