Julian Lewis, founding partner of Integrus Global and one of the co-authors of Infinite Giving, joins Dr. Misner on the podcast this week to talk about expanding Givers Gain beyond BNI.
Any community you belong to can become a Givers Gain Community by embracing the 7 principles of Givers Gain outlined in Infinite Giving. (Listen to Episode 676 if you’re not familiar with the 7 principles.)
Operating on the principles of Givers Gain can make a big difference to a community, whether it’s a family, a sports team, a religious group, or a political group. BNI chapters are positive places to be. By modeling the 7 principles, we can make the world a more positive place.
People who aren’t familiar with all 7 principles can wear themselves out giving too much. It’s very important to understand that it’s okay to gain and to learn to give from your saucer, not from your cup.

Priscilla: Hello everybody and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice, and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan, how are you today?
Ivan: I am doing great. And I have a good friend who is on the podcast with me, Julian Lewis. Julian co-wrote the book Infinite Giving. And we’re going to be talking about that, and Givers Gain Communities, in this podcast. And the reason we use the term Givers Gain Communities is that we wanted the book to be accessible to everyone. And we’re going to be talking about material from the book, Infinite Giving.
Julian was an amazing co-author, along with Greg Davies. And actually they brought me into the book concept that they had, and I appreciate them doing that.
Julian is passionate about personal and business success. He calls himself a portfolio entrepreneur with business interests as diverse as IT support and filmmaking. He’s a founding partner of the business coaching company, Integrus Global, and an Executive Director of BNI in the UK. In 1997, he started his first business and he’s gone on to start and grow businesses ever since. He continues to coach, mentor, and consult to businesses globally. Julian, welcome to BNI Podcast.
Julian: Thank you very much. It’s great to be here.
Ivan: Well, it’s good to have you here and I really did thoroughly enjoy working on the book with you guys. It was a blast. I particularly enjoyed the video we did of flipping the coin as whether it should be in Queen’s English or American English.
Julian: I’ve gotten into a lot of trouble in the UK for calling tails.
Ivan: Yes, I heard that. For those of you who don’t know what we’re talking about, go listen to or watch, go to my blog, IvanMisner.com and you’ll see a video back there of the coin flip on that. So let’s jump in, Julian. The first thing that you wanted to talk about was expanding Givers Gain beyond BNI, hence, the term we use: Givers Gain Communities. What do you have in mind there?
Julian: Yeah, exactly. So our goal with the book is to inspire one person at a time to live a personal life of Infinite Giving. And that’s very familiar to BNI members. And we also wanted, as well as inspiring individuals, is to introduce the concept of Givers Gain to other communities. And we call these Givers Gain Communities. I’ll give you some examples. So, these could be our own families. And business groups, such as BNI, are obviously included. Sports teams, religious groups, political groups, within individual businesses themselves, or even our friendship groups. There’s lots of different areas where people can benefit from Givers Gain. And the effect of Givers Gain on communities when it’s well understood, is going to make a big difference to those communities.
Ivan: Yeah.
Julian: So I mean, and Ivan you taught me this, Givers Gain starts with taking that kind of personal responsibility for our own actions. And it’s really clear to me that when we start talking about Givers Gain in our communities, this isn’t about us preaching to people about kind of forcing it on people. It’s about setting our own standard in our communities, wouldn’t you say?
Ivan: Yeah, I’ve always said it’s a standard that one needs to apply to oneself, not a stick that you hit other people with. And I see that happen sometimes where people are, you know, saying that person that doesn’t have a Givers Gain attitude, and oftentimes it’s the person who says that, I think, who generally doesn’t have it. It’s a standard we have to apply to ourselves.
Julian: Yeah, absolutely. And whilst we do that, and when we do that within our communities, other people can see that example. Of course, we might encourage them to read the book, Infinite Giving, so they can understand it even more.
Ivan: That’s right and the seven principles that we talked about in there. If you’re interested in listening to this podcast, go to podcast episode number 676. 676 for all seven of the principles that are part of Infinite Giving.
Julian: Yeah, absolutely. In BNI we have the phrase, Changing the way the world does business, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. I think with Givers Gain, especially when it’s married up to the seven principles to create Infinite Giving, we actually have the power here to change the world and really be a positive force on the world. People often say to me, and I’m sure they say to you, Ivan, that BNI chapters are very positive places to be, and this is one of the things that attracts people to BNI. Wouldn’t it be great if the whole world was like that? And certainly all of the communities that we spend the rest of our lives in, if they were like that, that would be a quite a different place for lots of people to live in.
Ivan: It would be. And to go back to the standard that you apply to yourself, I think the older I get, the less I believe in words, and I love words, but the less I believe in words, and the more I believe in behaviors. And it’s the application of the principles that really is so important to create a Givers Gain Community.
Julian: Yes, exactly. And I think it’s important that Givers Gain is well understood. Hence part of the motivation of the book is to define Givers Gain, and how we can turn it into Infinite Giving, because often people will get burnt out with their Givers Gain energy. And they’ll start with very good intentions and then that will drain off because they don’t necessarily understand the principles that we that we talk about in the book – giving from your saucer and not from your cup, and that it’s okay to gain. People grasp hold of the giving part of Givers Gain and sometimes can wear themselves out. So, I think it’s important that everybody understands that, both within BNI but also as we as we take it out into our communities.
Ivan: So you just gave two really important points from the book. One is – give from your saucer, not your cup, which is a quote from Lisa Nichols, who was a speaker at our international convention last week. And I think that’s so important. You know, don’t give more than you can possibly afford. But give what you can afford; give from your saucer, not your cup. It’s a great concept. But the second principle you mentioned was that it’s okay to gain, and sometimes people forget that part, don’t they?
Julian: Yeah, absolutely. And it’s all part of refilling our resources, because otherwise, it possibly won’t be Infinite Giving. And that’s one of the key things here. I’ve spoken with quite a number of people that have said things to me, like “I’m giving, I’m giving, I’m giving. I’m not getting anything back in it. And it’s just, you know, totally worn me out.”
Ivan:
Yeah.
Julian: Which is, you know, it’s fine to be a great giver. We want people to be great givers. But it’s actually okay to gain as well. Because, if you think about it, it’s got to be part of the ecosystem; otherwise, if everyone’s just trying to give and no one’s gaining, who do we give to? And so it’s really important that the things are said, givers and gain. It’s two words, it’s always been two words, and it’s part of that ecosystem that makes it work.
Ivan: Yeah, absolutely. And we have some stories in there about the importance of not only giving but of receiving from this as well. And I think that’s very important. Now, I’m gonna throw a surprise question at you here, Julian. Okay, this concept of the seven principles really came from you and Greg. Where did that come from? What made you think of these principles, which we played with a little bit as we were writing the book, but this was your idea and Greg’s idea. So where did it come from?
Julian: So, we were asked to do a presentation on Givers Gain. And I guess we’ve got a very… well, there’s two things. So, I’ve got a very kind of practical, implementation-focused view of the world in terms of this is a philosophy, and how does that practically apply itself in the world? So, I wanted to think about that during the presentation. And I wanted to do it with Greg because it is two words, and I wanted to get that kind of flip. What Greg is really fantastic at is the storytelling side. He’s known as the storyteller. Anyone that knows him knows that he’s got a story for every occasion. So we collaborated together to create the seven principles, which is actually on the BNI Business Builder, that original presentation which we’ve developed in the book. And it seemed to me that we needed some principles behind it. So, and that was way before we thought about Infinite Giving, that actually came later.
Ivan: Yeah.
Julian: To begin with, we just thought practically, How do you apply Givers Gain? And it also struck me that within BNI, everyone knows the philosophy of BNI. You’ve spoken about that before, Ivan, and how it’s quite incredible that everybody knows it. However, everyone is open to their own interpretation of it. And it’s probably quite timely that a broader, or a more detailed, definition was put on the philosophy.
Ivan: I couldn’t agree more. And that’s why I jumped at the opportunity to work with you guys in doing this book, because I think it really lays out what Givers Gain actually means very, very specifically. And I urge people to get it, we’ll have a link here in the podcasts for Amazon where people can get it. We need to be wrapping up. What effect do you think Givers Gain and Infinite Giving, can give on communities? Not only BNI as a community, but the broader sense of communities.
Julian: Well, I’m actually very excited about if we get this right, what effect Givers Gain can have on communities, because when it’s understood well, and in the book, we talk about Givers Gain plus the Seven Principles equals Infinite Giving. And if people grasp that, the philosophy of Givers Gain, for me that’s going to make the world a better place. Just a nicer place. And Givers Gain has both a practical, and we’ve got loads of examples of practical benefits of Givers Gain, you know, whereby I give to you, you give to me, or you give to somebody in my community, and, practically, we all help each other. But I think, and now more than ever really isn’t it? It also has a psychological effect in how communities see themselves. It increases positivity and decreases negativity. And for me, that’s always been a great message for the world. But you know, with everything that’s going on right now, it’s really good that communities can grasp positivity through Givers Gain, I think.
Ivan: Today more than ever, no doubt about it. Julian, thank you for inviting me to participate on that book. I appreciate it. And it was great working with you and maybe we’ll do another book down the road. I appreciate you being on the BNI podcast with me today.
Julian: No problem at all. And thank you for trusting me with Givers Gain.
Ivan: Oh, my pleasure. Back to you, Priscilla.
