Episode 679: How Young Do You Have to Be to Network?
Synopsis
Lorena Medina joins Dr. Misner on the podcast this week to share a story about a member named Rogelio who was introduced to BNI because his 10-year-old son started networking on his behalf.
The boy gave one of his father’s business cards to the headmistress of the school, whose husband just happened to be president of the local BNI chapter. He invited Rogelio to join, and from then on, Rogelio had no problem getting customers.
Networking Is a Team Sport
- Enlist your friends and family in your networking efforts. Even if they aren’t natural-born networkers like Rogelio’s son, they will know people you can reach out to.
- No one is too young to help out. Don’t wait until your kids grow up to get them involved.
- Collaborate with your employees. One BNI member Lorena knows goes back to his staff after every BNI meeting to brainstorm about people they can refer to other members of the chapter.
- Take your employees to BNI meetings–but make them earn the right to represent your business in BNI.
- Share your BNI success story with business owners you meet outside of BNI. If you’re a franchisee, tell the franchisor to encourage other franchisees to join their local chapters.

Priscilla:
Hello, everybody, and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello Ivan, how are you and where are you?
Ivan:
So, in addition to my many, many recorded visits all around the world this week, I am in North Carolina for a local BNI event. I’m traveling virtually around the world these days.
Priscilla:
Oh, great.
Ivan:
So today’s guest is someone who’s back for her second visit to BNI Podcast. Her name is Lorena Medina. Lorena is the National Director for BNI Mexico. She’s located in Leon and has been in business since 2006. Her interests include stories in any color, shape, and form–I love that. And her burning desire is to positively impact those around her with every thought, word, and action. Lorena, you’re absolutely doing that. Something no one knows about her blew me away when I saw it. It’s so funny. She loves unicorns and secretly wishes they were real. Who would have thought that’s the case? Lorena, welcome back to BNI Podcast.
Lorena:
Thank you, Ivan. It’s great to be here.
Ivan:
It’s good to have you, and you have a story that you wouldn’t tell me about. You said I had to hear it personally and experience it live. So I’m a little nervous, but let’s hear it.
Lorena:
Yeah, so I think you’re gonna love it. When I first heard it, it’s my all-time favorite BNI story.
Ivan:
By the way, I don’t say yes to people unless I know the stories normally, but you’re so good at what you do, I trust you. I’m going with it.
Lorena:
Well, thank you. I hope I deserve it. Okay, here it goes. The reason why I wanted to be here today with you is that I wanted to tell you the story of one of our networkers here in Mexico. He has been a member for five years in a Monterey chapter. That’s actually pretty close to Texas to where you are. And so it all started because Rogelio had a dream, he had a dream of becoming a business owner. He had been an employee all of his life and he dreamed about owning a business. And one very safe way to go into business for the first time is through a franchise. So what he did was that he purchased a franchise that is called Chem-Dry. It’s to wash upholstery and carpets, so it’s a cleaning service.
Ivan:
I’m familiar with it.
Lorena:
So he purchased a Chem-Dry franchise. And he fulfilled his dream of becoming a business owner. The problem was that he had a business but no customers. So he was very concerned about this. And one time during dinner with his family, he started talking about his fear and his concern that he was not going to be able to keep this business and keep this dream alive because he was having a hard time finding new customers.
His 10-year old son asked him, “Do you have business cards?” And he said, “Well, no, I’m gonna get them in a few days, so I’ll let you know.” So a few days go by and he gets his business cards and his son gets a few business cards out of his pocket without him noticing. And the next day at school, he approaches, very serious, he approaches the headmistress of his school and he says, “Listen, Miss, my father has a new business and he needs more customers. So in case you need someone to clean your carpet, here’s a business card.”
He left, and the headmistress was so touched by this little kid that had so much initiative, that she talked about this incident with her husband, who happened to be the BNI chapter president. So he said, “Give me the business card. I’ll call him tomorrow.” So he did and he invited him over and Rogelio was immediately convinced that this was the answer. And long story short, you can never be too young to network.
Ivan:
That is too funny. And Rogelio has been a member now of BNI for how long?
Lorena:
For five years.
Ivan:
Five years. And it’s because of his 10-year-old son.
Lorena:
That is correct. And the moral of the story is that he instinctively knew how to network. But most of us don’t. So for the rest of us that don’t instinctively know how to do it, there’s BNI.
Ivan:
Yeah, because we’re not doing it in colleges, are we? Colleges and universities, we’re not teaching networking in university.
Lorena:
We’re barely teaching business.
Ivan:
Yeah, fair enough. I can’t argue with that. What a great story that is. And now, do you know the son’s name?
Lorena:
No, I don’t. That’s sad.
Ivan:
I tell you what, I would do a little video message for Rogelio and for his son, just saying well done.
Lorena:
Of course. My pleasure. And the cool thing is that he must be now like, 15 years old. So uh, yeah, yeah. So that’s part of what strikes me, that we constantly wait until kids grow up, so is it only then that we start talking with them about business. And I don’t think you can be too young to get yourself involved in the family business, or at least to understand what it’s going to be like when you grow up. And we don’t have that today.
Ivan:
Yeah, what a natural. And talking to your family, I think, is a great suggestion, it’s really important, and getting their support helps to build your network.
Lorena:
Yes.
Ivan:
Who else should you be talking to, besides your 10-year old kids?
Lorena:
Well, in general your family. Your networking strategy is going to be a lot easier and a lot more successful if you involve the people in your life.
Ivan:
Right.
Lorena:
Because it becomes a community effort. It’s not just you alone, as a business owner. For example, I do know a business owner that of course is in BNI. And what he did was he joined BNI and on the very first day he went back to his employees, and he said, “I got us into this. So we’re all going to pitch in and every week, I’m going to come back to you and we’re gonna bounce ideas on how we can refer all the members in my chapter.” Because it becomes a collaborative action instead of just you on your own, because that’s another thing that they don’t teach us in school. And being a business owner doesn’t have to be a solo activity. You have a team, and networking is also a team activity.
Ivan:
Let me make sure I get this right. The person you’re talking about – he goes back every week, and he has a meeting with his staff to talk about some of his members that do presentations or whatever that week, he talks to the staff every week about them. Yeah?
Lorena:
Yes. And because instead of just sitting by yourself and thinking, ‘How can I refer the people in my network?’, you do it collaboratively. And it’s a team effort. And he gives a ton of referrals every week, because he doesn’t do it on his own.
Ivan:
Right.
Lorena:
So, I think it’s a great way to do it.
Ivan:
I know a number of members that will bring their staff to a BNI meeting so they can experience it and understand this crazy thing that they’re talking about every week, when they come back to the office from a BNI meeting. That’s a pretty good idea. Have you seen people do that?
Lorena:
Yes, for sure. And they also, they use it as a reward for their best employees, you have to earn your right to represent this company in a BNI chapter. It’s not something that I’m gonna just let you take for granted. And I’m gonna pay the membership for you, and I’m going to send you, and then you’re gonna underperform? Uh-uh, no way. You’re gonna have to earn it. So I think it’s a great way, because in the end, this is going to benefit you. You’re going to grow, you’re going to learn, you’re going to make connections that you’re going to take wherever you go. And on top of everything, you’re going to have results because you’re on the sales team. So all the benefits are for you and you need to earn this spot.
Ivan:
Yeah, I love it. Any closing thoughts before we wrap up?
Lorena:
Well, there’s a second part to this story of Rogelio that I want to tell you about. So fast forward a few months. And Rogelio has a call with his franchisor and his fellow franchisees, and they’re talking about how hard it is to get new customers. And it’s a common theme. So Rogelio gets up and he says, “I don’t know what you’re all doing. But I joined BNI and I took care of that problem.”
So the next thing that happens is that his franchisor got in touch with us to learn more about BNI, and now we have close to 10 Chem-Dry franchisees around the system here in Mexico, so we have a very profitable partnership with them.
Ivan:
That’s a great story. I love that. And we love working with franchises, who send a lot of their franchisees to BNI. I do a lot of presentations for those organizations online to help them, and not just to talk about BNI, but to talk about how to network. So great stuff.
Lorena:
And it started with a 10-year-old.
Ivan: (laughing)
And it started with a 10-year-old. How cool is that? All right. Anything else before we wrap?
Lorena:
Nothing else, I’m so happy that you trusted me enough to tell you this story on the fly. And I hope you really liked it. And if you want more stories, I have plenty.
Ivan:
Yeah, I want you to talk about, not today, what is it? Your horse paradigm? We’re going to talk about that.
Lorena:
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let’s do that.
Ivan:
I want you to talk about that at a future one. And I got to talk to you more at some point about this unicorn thing.
Lorena: (laughing)
Ivan:
I’ve known you for years. You are so not the kind of person, in my mind, to, you know, thought that you loved unicorns. So we’re gonna have to have a conversation about that.
Lorena:
Yes, for sure.
Ivan:
Thanks for coming back to the BNI podcast. We appreciate everything you do for BNI Mexico, and for Latin America. BNI Mexico has been very supportive of BNI Latin America, and we appreciate that.
Lorena:
My pleasure.
Ivan:
All right, back to you, Priscilla, thank you.
Priscilla:
Okay, great. Lorena, you have something in common with my three-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter. Because she loves unicorns.
Lorena:
She also has a unicorn onesie?
Priscilla:
Yes, she does. She had a unicorn birthday cake this year. Anyway, okay, well, thank you both so very much.
