Episode 674: The Amazing Speaker Switch
Synopsis
This week on the podcast, Dr. Misner shares a story from BNI member and Quad Cities Director Consultant Mark Collier about a new take on feature presentations.
This technique is a real test of how well you know your fellow members’ businesses–and an opportunity to schedule a one-to-one if you don’t. It’s also a great way to get your chapter to sit up and pay attention while you and your partner are presenting.
The Great Speaker Switch is similar to the Cards in a Basket meeting stimulant for Weekly Presentations, but you don’t draw your presentation partner at random.
Instead, you and the BNI member scheduled to present the same week/the next week switch places and give each other’s Feature Presentations, including answering questions.
If you’ve done something like this in your BNI chapter, tell us about your experience in the comments.

Priscilla
Hello, everybody and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan. How are you today and what could this possibly be?
Ivan (laughing)
So I am doing great. I have an idea that just literally hit me this moment.
I miss you asking, saying “How are you? And where are you?” So many people say that to me, you know, they will come up to me and say, “Hi, Ivan, how are you? And where are you?” So I have an idea, Priscilla. How about I start saying where I am that week, because we’ve still got the COVID thing, where I am that week online?
Priscilla
What does that mean – online?
Ivan
Well, wherever I went to, because, I mean, last week, I was in Hong Kong, and I was in Australia on live events, so I could just start talking about the live Zoom events that I’ve been doing. What do you think of that?
Priscilla
Oh, that sounds good.
Ivan
All right, so we’ll try that out. It’s cheating a little but I’m gonna go with that because I miss the “How are you? Where are you?”
Priscilla (laughing)
Okay, it’s coming.
Ivan
All right, so you ask what in the world is the amazing speaker switch? I had an email from Mark Collier, who is a BNI member, and he wrote me about something that he and a fellow member did that I thought was so amazing that I had to share the story here on the BNI Podcast. And Mark wrote
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mark Collier. I live in Quad Cities Iowa/Illinois, where I’m a sales manager for Todd’s Mudjacking and Basement Services.
We’ll come back to that, Priscilla. He said,
I’ve been a BNI member for six years in the Tuesday Breakfast Club. I wanted to share with you a unique method of presenting that a fellow chapter member and I tried.
I love this, this idea, by the way.
Several months ago, before the transition to virtual meetings, Heidi Lubben — a Mary Kay Consultant — and I were scheduled to present on the same day (our chapter has two presenters each week).
Heidi and I have had several conversations over the years, both with each other and other BNI members, on how we are consistently able to pass and receive a high number of qualified, informed referrals. And the answers are usually the same. We each know our chapter members and we know what they do really well.
So this inclusive knowledge and regular action with our chapter brethren simultaneously keeps them in our instant recall and it empowers us to speak informatively to potential referrals. Bottom line, know your people.
Now, host time out here for a second, Priscilla. So far so good, right?
Priscilla
Yeah.
Ivan
This part is interesting, but it’s this next part that I absolutely loved, relating to what Mark and Heidi did. He went on to say,
As our presentation date approached, Heidi and I discussed doing something different this time. We both enjoy keeping the presentations fresh through a myriad of administrations; this has included games, prizes, audience participation, physical exertion, and interactive visual aids, just to name a few. So being on the same date, the same speaker date, availed us of an opportunity we had not tried yet. So after speaking, meeting, planning, our presentation date arrived.
I presented first. And after being introduced, I announced that day that I would be presenting on my good friend, Heidi’s business, Mary Kay, and the products that I use from them.
Now the reveal, he said, was met with looks of surprise, renewed interest, and even a few squeals of delight. Yes, Priscilla, he actually said “squeals of delight.”
He went on to say,
I spent my presentation covering the products that men and women should use regularly to protect their skin and illustrating the benefits as a living example. Being that I’m a guy, in a construction role, with admittedly manly attributes and being a guy, it comes off as possibly out of place, and probably laughable that I would be so knowledgeable in skincare products from a massive cosmetics company, you know, that would be interesting.
But is it laughable? Does it make sense that he is knowledgeable? I think it does. That’s me saying I think it does but I think that was his point, it was showing that anybody can understand the cosmetics business and use them.
Priscilla
Right.
Ivan
So, and then when it was Heidi’s turn, he said, “Our chapter was equally excited to hear her elaborating on mudjacking and basement construction methods with ease and fluency. “
Now, Priscilla, I had to look up what mudjacking was. Do you know what it is?
Priscilla
No, I have never even heard of it.
Ivan
Never heard of it. So, according to Monsieur Google, it is a solution consisting of cement and other materials which is injected through two inch holes drilled into the concrete and it expands which raises the falling slab back into place. See, this is one of the things I love about BNI, I’m always learning about new businesses.
Okay, so back to the story.
Heidi took her familiarity with my business to the next level by role playing referral scenarios. And interesting tells, buzz words, and responses with chapter participants. Being that Heidi is a woman, sells skincare and cosmetic products, with attributes rivaling super-models, and being a woman, might come off as out of place and possibly laughable that she would be so knowledgeable on construction methods and their practical application to domestic environments. Is that strange?
I don’t think so. And neither does Mark. Mark concluded by saying,
Our presentations were a success. Our audience was informed, it was entertained, it was impressed. More importantly, either consciously or subconsciously our chapter saw firsthand the results of truly knowing your network partners. They were reminded that no topic or vocation is beyond anyone, no matter what they themselves do. The message was clear, Heidi and I know each other’s businesses and character well enough to represent one another effectively in our networks, resulting in the ability to find more referral opportunities and help turn them into closed business.
He went on to say that there’s far more to the story, and he was very gracious about our work here, Priscilla, on the BNI Podcast, which I really appreciate. Thank you, Mark.
You know, when I started BNI in 1985, it was this kind of creativity that I just loved seeing and made me so proud of being part of this organization. It’s an example of surprising people in a fun and educational way. More importantly, it showed, this exercise showed just how both members really, really knew one another.
And so look, I’d love to chat for a minute or two, Priscilla, if you have some thoughts. And I just want to say, I know that there were some stereotypes described here for both Mark and Heidi. But it’s important to know your audience. And as he said, they knew their audience, and Mark and Heidi knew the audience well, and their amazing effort and surprising presentations went over incredibly well in the chapter. I think it’s this kind of creativity that really has you stand out as a member, and helps people remember who you are and what you do. What are your thoughts?
Priscilla
Okay, well, I do have some thoughts. First of all, I hadn’t ever heard somebody doing like the 10 minute or seven minute, whatever amount you get, complete switch before, that’s completely new.
Ivan
I hadn’t either. That’s why this jumped out at me.
Priscilla
But our chapter often, kind of at the last minute, will just for fun, have the experiment of turning to the person to your right or something like that and doing their infomercial. So you have to remember everything they’ve taught you, and it just you know, happens quickly and you don’t have a lot of preparation and so it’s very challenging, but it’s really fun.
Ivan
It is fun.
Priscilla
We’ve done that, we’ve also picked cards out of a basket.
Ivan
Yeah, cards out of the basket is actually a meeting stimulant for BNI so you can find it in writing from your chapter.
Priscilla
Right. And it’s very similar to what they did, only they had preparation and they probably just had a lot of fun with it. It sounds great.
Ivan
I can just imagine you know, Mark, talking about cosmetics, and Heidi talking about mudjacking. It’s just funny and at the same time informative. Absolutely love it.
Priscilla
Right. Well, just about the Mary Kay skincare. If you’re a construction worker, you are out in the sun all the time. So having some protective cream on you is perfectly important. Yeah.
Ivan
Yeah. But you don’t usually hear somebody in the construction business talking about it.
Priscilla
No, you don’t.
Ivan
And that’s what makes this jump out, it’s so interesting.
Priscilla
And so fun.
Ivan
So, here’s what I’d love you to do if you’re listening to this podcast. If you’ve seen something in your chapter, that is really cool, that’s really interesting, that’s different, that’s positive, I would love for you to share it here on the comments. As I’ve always said, I read every comment that gets posted. So just post it up here. It’s the way we all get new ideas on how to make our meetings even more exciting, keeping the fun in the fundamentals. That’s everything I’ve got today, Priscilla.
Priscilla
Okay, well, that was great. Ivan, thank you so much for sharing that with us. It’s very, very interesting.
