第637集完整記錄
In this week’s podcast episode, Dr. Misner talks about his new book, The Networking Mentor. This is a great book for BNI members who want to mentor new members and for new BNI members who want to be mentored.
Unlike most of Dr. Misner’s books, The Networking Mentor is told as a parable of a mentor (Jim) and mentee (Ken). Jim sees that Ken is struggling and shows him how he can build his business through networking.

Priscilla Rice:
Hello, everybody, and welcome back to the official BNI podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice, and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the founder and the chief visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan. How are you and where are you?
Ivan Misner :
I am home in Austin, Texas today but I’m meeting with my new friend Robert Skrob, who wrote the book, Retention Point. He and I are doing a book together. We don’t have a title for the book, but it’s about membership. And it’s about BNI. And you’ll all hear about the book more in the next year.
Robert Skrob again wrote the book Retention Point, which is about retaining members or retaining people within a business. Great book. Great concept. And that’s what I’m working on this week with Robert.
Priscilla Rice :
Oh, great. And so tell us about the Networking Mentor.
Ivan Misner :
So I’m, I want to talk about another book, a book that I recently came out with called the Networking Mentor. Priscilla, I like to plan my spontaneity. And this is not planned. I’m going to be spontaneous. I’m going to talk about this book. And I haven’t created an outline for this discussion which is rare for me. I like to plan my spontaneity. But I want to talk about this book, the Networking Mentor, which is on BNIPodcast.com. You can see it on the website. And I’ll make sure to include a link here. But this is a great book for BNI members who want to be a mentor to other BNI members, or new members who want to be mentored by a BNI member.
I want to talk a little bit about this book called the Networking Mentor. And I want to walk you through some of the chapters of the book starting with the first chapter, Chapter One. And this is a book that’s different than every book I’ve ever written. Because it’s a parable. It’s a story about–
Priscilla Rice:
Wow, that’s interesting.
Ivan Misner :
It’s a story. It’s not just “Hey, here’s what you need to do to be a mentor.” It’s done as a story. And in the story, Jim is the mentor; Ken Is the mentee.
The book starts with talking about how Ken is struggling in business. Does this sound familiar to anybody who’s listening to this? Just struggling in business, you need someone to help you. Jim is the mentor. Jim connects with Ken, because Jim is actually a client of Ken’s in the book. And Jim sees that Ken is struggling and he says, hey, there’s a great organization that I’m part of, it’s a networking group. Come visit. Now, the interesting thing is Ken hates networking–hates it. But Jim says “You’ve got to come to this thing.” And that’s really the premise of the book.
By the way, you’ll see in the very first chapter, there’s an office manager mentioned in there, her name is Dana. So this is just between you and I Priscilla–and the handful of people, okay, maybe hopefully, the tens of thousands of people who are listening to this podcast. The office manager is named Dana. So just between you and I and everybody else, Dana is my assistant. I already knew that. I wanted to throw her name, because she’s such a great assistant, I actually threw her name in the book. And so Dana helps with this meeting between Ken and Jim.
And basically, Ken explains how he’s struggling in business. And Jim explains how he can generate a whole lot more business through this process of networking, and even explains in the book how, in just a few years, he he went from the from being on the verge of bankruptcy, to being incredibly successful. What I love about this part of my book, is that I just heard–and I hear stories like this all the time–but just a couple of days ago, I heard about a BNI member who was on the verge of bankruptcy, was living in their van. They were a contractor. They were living in their van. And they joined BNI. And in the last 10 years–he’s been a BNI member for 10 years–totally changed this life. He’s got an incredibly successful business with employees. And he went from living in his van, on the verge of bankruptcy, to having a successful business with multiple employees doing really well. And that’s what this book talks about. It talks about how Jim went from almost being in bankruptcy to running a successful business because of his networking efforts. And that’s the first chapter.
The second chapter of the book is about the meeting. So Ken goes to the meeting. This is important because you’re all BNI members. What happens when a visitor visits? Are you making them feel welcome? Do they walk through the door and feel like “Wow, this is incredible”? And that’s what Ken experienced in this book, the Networking Mentor. Ken walked in, and he was like, “Wwow, these people are incredible. They’re motivated, they’re excited. They’re focused on doing business. This is it really exciting.”
And that’s the amazing part of a great BNI meeting. And he can watch this meeting, watch the educational moment, he saw the amazing number of referrals that were passed. He had a fantastic experience. And he’d never seen anything like that in a networking meeting before. At some point in the meeting, and the book talks about this, the code of ethics, BNI’s code of ethics.
Now, I think that’s important because in chapter five of this book, we have a section called the Nay Sayer. The naysayer, the person who says, hey, what the heck are you thinking? Ken, really you’re going to go join that BNI thing? This guy was a member of BNI at one point. His name is Barry in the book, and Barry says, “Wait a minute, what is this on your desk?” And he’s looking at the code of ethics and he says, “Is this the oath?” And Ken says, “What do you mean, the oath?” and Barry says “The Oath in this networking thing.” Ken says, if you mean the code of ethics, yeah, that’s what it is. And this guy Barry says, “Hey, I was a member of that group. It didn’t work out well. I don’t recommend it. It’s not what was advertised.”
And of course, Ken freaks out a little bit. He’s like “Really? Seriously? Maybe I shouldn’t join. I’ve been invited to join. Maybe I shouldn’t join. And so what he does is he reaches out to his mentor, to Jim. And he says, Jim, this guy, Barry says, maybe I shouldn’t join. And he sets him straight. His mentor sets him straight. He says, look, Barry was a member. He didn’t really do the things that he promised to do. He’s no longer a member. You know him, you know me. Who do you want to do business with?”
And that was a seminal point for this guy. Because he knew Ken was honest and ethical, and he wanted to do business with that guy. And he knew Barry was problematic and full of drama. And why should he listen to that guy. And he ended up joining.
We’re about halfway through the book. I’ll give you just a little bit more in the book. The book, The Networking Mentor, talks about the friendship factor and how it It is about building relationships in the organization, but that you got to go beyond the relationships that you have. You know, one of the strengths of being is that we’re all friends. But one of the weaknesses is that we’re all friends. And you have to work past that. And you have to put it all together through the process and the system, and the relationships that you have.
And the very last part of the book is, I think, incredibly powerful. And I would love to have those of you listening to this, if you find this of value to you, pick up a copy of the book, The Networking Mentor. You can read it all in an hour and a half. It’s a short book. The last part of the book is really where Ken has trained. He’s been mentored by Jim, Jim’s mentored Ken. Ken has gone from being a struggling business to a successful business. Now, what? And the last chapter is about Ken becoming a mentor.
And the subtitle for this book is, whose story are you in? We all have people who are in our story. But the real powerful thing in mentoring, I believe, is whose story are you in? Whose life are you making a difference in, and that’s the last chapter of the book. What goes around comes around. Someone has helped me, I’m now going to help them be successful. And all this, although this book, Priscilla, the networking mentor is not about BNI, it’s all about BNI, even though it doesn’t say it’s about BNI. It’s all about BNI. And it’s about what difference you can make in other people’s lives. And that’s my new book, called The Networking Mentor, and I urge you to go out and get a copy.
Priscilla Rice :
That sounds great. And I like that you’re doing something unique that you haven’t ever done this before in this format.
Ivan Misner :
Yeah, thanks. It’s a you know, a parable’s not my normal style. I co-authored this with CG Cooper. CG did an amazing amount of work with this book and, and my editor, who helped put it all together, really did a fantastic job. My kudos go out to both CG and my editor for the book.
Priscilla Rice :
Great. Well, I look forward to reading it.
Ivan Misner :
