Synopsis
In most settings, anyone who shows up is eligible to win the door prize. In BNI, you need to do more than just show up: you need to give a referral or bring a visitor before you can win.
Since the door prize is always provided by a BNI member, members often ask Dr. Misner what makes a good door prize. He decided to put that question out to the members on his Facebook page. The members told him that a good door prize
- Should have recall value (remind the recipient of the giver).
- Has intention behind it and shows you thought about your choice.
- Showcases the giver and the giver’s company.
- Is related to your business (like spot cleaner from a carpet cleaning business)
- Helps the recipient be more successful (e.g. leadership books, especially if they are autographed)
- Is something you make yourself (cookies or a thumb drive containing all the BNI podcast episodes).
- Comes from another business in the BNI chapter.
In general, personal gifts are better than impersonal ones. A gift certificate from a fellow BNI member is better than a gift card from a big chain. Alcohol is not a good choice when you don’t know who will be getting the gift.
See the Giver’s Gain bracelet that Link Wachler uses as a door prize.
What are some great door prizes you have given or received? Let us know in the comments.

Priscilla Rice :
Hello, everybody and welcome back to the Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice, and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the founder and the chief visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan. How are you and where are you?
Ivan Misner :
Hello. It is great to talk to you again Priscilla, and this is Thanksgiving week in the United States and I’m home. Thanksgiving, which is a holiday in the US, and I’m expecting a lot of my family to be here. So it’s, it’s a good week. Thanks.
Priscilla Rice :
Oh, good. That’s my favorite holiday, by the way.
Ivan Misner :
Well, who doesn’t love turkey?
Priscilla Rice :
Exactly.
Ivan Misner :
I have to be careful though, because there are a lot of wild turkeys, right here in Austin, where I live on about 10 acres by the lake. And we see a lot of wild turkeys and I gotta tell you, I’m tempted to get one of those turkeys for Thanksgiving, but I haven’t ever done it.
Priscilla Rice:
I’m glad. Okay, no, they need to be free.
Ivan Misner :
They do. Yeah, they’re amazing creatures.
Priscilla Rice :
Yeah.
Ivan Misner :
So we’re going to talk about door prizes today, yeah?
Priscilla Rice :
Yeah. I’d love to hear what you have to say.
Ivan Misner:
So a door prize is generally a term–and I’ve had people ask me, what is a “door prize?” It’s a term usually for showing up. Show up, you’re eligible for the door prize. In BNI, it’s a term for showing up and giving a referral or bringing a visitor. If you give a referral, or you bring a visitor, you’re eligible for the door prize.
So the question then is, what’s a good door prize? And I get that one asked a lot, what’s a good door prize? And so what I decided to do was to crowdsource an answer. I put a Facebook post up about a month ago, and I said to members, what’s what’s a good door prize? What do you think a good door prize is? I’m going to give you my opinion. I’d love to hear your opinion, Priscilla. But let me give you the opinion of about 10 or 12 BNI members from around the world as to what they think a good door prize is. You ready?
Priscilla Rice:
Mm-hmm.
Ivan Misner:
So Vikas says the door prize should be something with your company branding, which has great recall value–I like that, recall value–that reminds people about the giver. And I think that’s great advice. I recommend that.
Rebecca, who’s one of my top fans–we now see on Facebook, who’s a top fan. Rebecca is a top fan. And she says that door prize is one that’s remembered (Vikas already also said that), and it’s something that is planned. It has intention. Don’t just wing it. And I think that’s great advice from Rebecca.
Lagi says the door prize is about recognition. We should honor that. It’s an opportunity to showcase ourselves and the company we represent. I think that’s great advice.
Beth, who’s also a top fan, says that she’s given–I like this a lot–she’s given homemade cookies, a plant, a gift certificate to another business in the BNI chapter, a gift card to a local restaurant, a landscape photograph printed on canvas from a photographer. Those are some of the kinds of things she’s done. Honestly, I think some of the best are the personal stuff, that Beth mentioned, the cookies, the plant, a gift certificate to another BNI member. I think those are great things.
Marie says she recently went to a business development conference and bought the books from various speakers so that she could give them as a door prize. Maria, I love that, especially if you can get them to sign the book. I think that makes a great door prize.
Michelle, who’s a top fan, says that as a dentist that’s passionate about health, she loves giving something like an amazing electric toothbrush, because she knows it can change someone’s health. Michelle, I love that idea? I think it’s great. I agree with that completely. And I think it’s very tangible. And it’s very appropriate to the business you’re in. I think that’s one of the best suggestions.
I got a few more, Priscilla, and then we’re going to open it up. Kate says–these are all contributions from BNI members from my Facebook page. “Our chapter tends to have door prizes that relate to their business.” Kate, I love that. “Our carpet cleaner brings a small spot spray and cloth. Our car sprayer brings something car related.” She said, “I tend to take things like a coloring book and felt tips so that you can color in the things that relate to what I’m doing. Our window installer has brought a window cleaner before.” And her masseuse–I love this her masseuse once brought in a massage ball and a bottle of baby oil.
That obviously resulted in a pretty big chuckle from the chapter, but was very relevant to what that masseuse provided, which was massages: so a massage ball and baby oil. I think that was really creative and appropriate to their business.
Link, who I’ve known for years, has something he gives called “the Givers Gain bracelet,” which is a constant reminder of BNI’s giving philosophy. What I’m going to do here on this podcast is include the link to the Givers Gain bracelet that Linc gives as a door prize in his presentations. And here’s the beauty of it: Linc, God bless him, donates the profits to the BNI Foundation, which I really appreciate and thank him very much.
Let me give you a handful more. Jackie says that as a travel advisor, she always likes to do something related to her profession like a duffel bag of travel tote, earplugs. You know, a converter, a basket with food items from that country. She doesn’t like giving gift cards, because she says it’s too impersonal. I’m inclined to agree with that.
Here’s a comment from somebody. I’m not going to name the person because I disagree with them. So I’m not going to throw them under the bus. This person says she doesn’t recommend any door prizes. She doesn’t like door prizes. I respectfully disagree. I created the door prize program in BNI in 1985. Because I think we need to positively recognize those people who are giving to the membership. And that’s the reason I created door prizes. Bring in a visitor, bring in a referral, you get eligibility for the door prize. So this particular member doesn’t like the door prize. I disagree with them. I wanted to bring it up and I wanted to explain why.
Couple more. Owen he says he’s an architect. And he loves giving–and this I think is incredibly creative–a birdhouse. A special birdhouse. And he calls it his “bird villa,” which he says is an extension of his own profession, and people love seeing them and getting one. I think that’s great.
Priscilla Rice :
No kidding. I want him to come to my group.
Ivan Misner :
Let me do two or three more and open it up. Trevor says, and I think this is pretty cool, a thumb drive with all the BNI podcasts on it. I think that’s pretty cool. Doesn’t cost much at all. It’s a thumb drive, but he took the time to put all the BNI podcasts on it. I really like it.
Rick says don’t give booze. Don’t give alcohol, which is interesting. When I did this ask on my Facebook page I had a lot of people say, give a bottle of liquor, a bottle of wine. And I had a lot of people say don’t give a bottle of wine or liquor. I’m inclined to agree with Rick. And I’m a person, Priscilla, who has a wine cellar with 1600 spots for wine. So I love wine. But I wouldn’t necessarily give it as a door prize, because you never know who you’re giving it to. Could be somebody who doesn’t drink it could be somebody who seriously doesn’t drink, if you know what I mean. And you don’t want to do that. And so I’m inclined to agree with Rick even though I love wine.
Two more and then I’m gonna open it up. Canaan says a good door prizes one which really creates an impact in the minds of those who receive it. Canaan, I totally agree.
And one more top fan of mine on Facebook, Atierra, says a perfect door prize, in my opinion should be something which can add value to the person doing the presentation. I agree completely.
So, Priscilla, we’re almost out of time. But these are the things that were given to me by many BNI members on my Facebook page about what makes a good door prize.
Priscilla Rice:
Okay, well, I’ll add to it. One of my favorite prizes that somebody gave me was a little puzzle that really was just like a tiny little puzzle that came in as a little gift box and it was so much fun to put together. I often give orchids to people. I used to give wine, but for that very reason that you just spoke about, I don’t do that anymore, because I never know that people are drinking. I used to get some high-end chocolate bars and put a little ribbon around them. That was kind of fun. I’ve often given CDs of people, artists that have worked in the studio that somehow I have extra CDs that they’ve left here, given to me.
Link actually sent me one of his bracelets. One of those Givers Gain bracelets, which was very kind. Somebody once gave me a bottle of vanilla that they had made themselves. So I think I think homemade gifts are wonderful, but also, you know, good things to eat, and flowers and all that, they’re good too.
Ivan Misner:
Yeah, you know what I’m hearing? Impersonal–not a great door prize. Personal: a very good door prize.
Priscilla Rice :
Right. I’ll just add one more. Somebody gave me last week a bottle of virgin olive oil that he put some herbs in. So I can’t open it till Christmas, but isn’t that neat?
Ivan Misner :
It is. This said by somebody who goes through a ton of olive oil. So I love. Good fresh olive oil. Great, great idea. Yeah. Well, thanks, Priscilla. That’s all I have for today.
Priscilla Rice :
Okay, well, that’s a fun topic. Thank you, Ivan. And I bet you we all need a little help with that. So that’s great.
I want to thank you, Ivan for sharing all of that and also say that this podcast has a new sponsor. Go check out the great content available at www.ivansinnercircle.com. And Ivan has assembled a wide array of topics and you’re invited to participate. So thank you so much for listening.
This is Priscilla Rice, and we look forward to having you join us again next week for another exciting episode of The Official BNI Podcast.
