Hi, this is Ivan Misner, Founder & Chief Visionary Officer of BNI. This is a Special Episode of the Official BNI Podcast.
I know many of you are struggling.
Just to give you an update, we have invested massive resources to transition BNI to an online platform (think of 9,500 Zoom accounts for all of our groups, along with the training, and staffing resources to create manuals and processes in just a matter of weeks). We have invested heavily to make sure you, our members can continue to benefit from being part of BNI.
Know that BNI has been impacted as well. To put this in perspective, we have had to lay off about a third of our global staff (hopefully on an interim basis). We hope to bring many of them back. ALL remaining BNI employees have taken an across the board 25% – 50% pay cut.
BNI is a face-to-face networking company. Our entire business was predicated on in-person meetings. We are trying to turn-on-a-dime to continue offering services to you, our members through BNI Online. Transparency is important and I believe that sharing this information with you is the right thing to do.
I also want to communicate another message. I truly believe we will prevail. You will prevail. We will prevail together. We will all get through this, and BNI intends to be right there with you.
A message will go out soon as to what we can
do for the members AND still stay in business ourselves. Be patient and be
understanding. We are all in this together. All of us.
In the meantime, I want to share with you some of the amazing stories that I have received regarding BNI Online. In a time of crisis, we are coming together to support one another, and I thought you might find some of these success stories to be inspiring. I know I have.
Before I start with the stories sent in, last week, let me start with a question that I was asked about BNI Online. I recently had a chapter President say to me that she was having difficulty getting one of her long-time “seasoned members” (I think she meant Baby Boomers) to use the platform – the BNI Online platform. She said he barely used BNI Connect. What could she tell him to get him to participate?
I told her this. I HATE change. No,
seriously, I hate change. The one thing I hate more than change, is failure. I
really hate failure. He can change or he can fail. The choice is his. Tell him
you’re there to help him through this if, he too, hates failure more than
change. You’re there for him.
Change or failure.
I want to talk about the change that has
taken place with BNI Online and how it is leading to success for our members. Sit
back for a while – I want to give you some good ones. Many of these have been
edited down so I can cover more.
Mario Zambrano a member and friend of mine in Austin said: “I have been blown away by the speed BNI pivoted to online. Today we had our first meeting and it was dynamic and productive. I know how much it takes to make it work and I have never seen it done in one week. Bravo.”

the Chief Technology Officer for a very successful technology company.]
Arumugam says, “I’m with a Titanium chapter of 95 members in India, we had 100% attendance at our 1st BNI Online Chapter meeting. It was an awesome experience, positive contribution by all members. Moreover, we inducted a new member. Thank you BNI.”
Dr. Molina said, “All of my clinics are closed due to the quarantine. Amazingly, because of member referrals we received an order for 10,000 boxes! It is amazing how BNI connects people during a time when businesses are really down. “
Rick says, “I am in Thousand Oaks, CA. Today we had our first BNI Online meeting. The team decided to forego the usual educational moment and use that time to have a couple of members inform the chapter how to navigate this crisis. They gave information on how to apply for government loans and how to deal with their mortgages. It was great to see all the members excited to help the businesses most affected by the lockdowns.”
[Thanks Rick, it is a great example of how BNI is more than just referrals. It is about relationships.]
Amit says “BNI online works as an anti-depressant and connects me with the world while we are locked up in our homes and shows a ray of hope that things will be normal again.”

Phillip says, “We’ve been through the Great Flood of 2016 and now this mess. What surprised me was this…
“We had perfect attendance of 35 members! (We even had 3-4 visitors). I expected to hear about a lot about struggles, but instead I heard a lot of excitement. Small business owners are creative and nimble. Everyone was finding ways to keep their business moving forward.
“Who needs a bailout? People helping people and creative solutions are what makes small business great!”

Elbert from the Philippines says, “We’ve been taking advantage of BNI Online to ask for referral sources instead of referrals to clients, and then invite them as visitors into the chapter! At this morning’s meeting, we had 30 visitors. We are planting the seeds now, so that when the situation gets better, we’re ready to harvest and hit the ground running!”
Cincy says, “During this lock down period, it’s great that I am associated with this international organization. The online meetings are helping us to inspire and get inspired.”

Tommy says, “Shutters are being closed and countries are going under complete lockdown. But there’s a ray of hope with BNI. Chapter meetings, trainings, workshops, and member one-to-ones, everything is happening online. I am proud to be a part of this transition. We also see many members helping each other in this time of distress.”

Charlie from UK says, “I was extremely apprehensive about meeting online, but I have to say – what a meeting! Plenty of referrals were passed, everyone was positive, and it was emotional too. I want to thank BNI for the swift action during the outbreak. I truly believe that in times like these, BNI and the relationships built in the room, go a long way towards carrying us through darker times.”
Here’s my last story today: Runjuhn from India shared the story of Avinash, who couldn’t make the in-person meetings for BNI because he was watching his young daughter, Laishia, but with BNI Online he was able to attend. He said, “BNI has helped change lives and BNI Online is doing even more during these testing times. I’m grateful to be reunited with my BNI friends when I needed them most. Thank you BNI for everyone who has made this happen.”

debrief he introduced us to his daughter who just woke up from sleep and was
still able to see Dad around.]
These are amazing stories and
they are only a fraction of what I received last week.
This, BNI members, is the way
you turn a big ole batch of lemons into a vat of lemonade. We are all feeling
the pinch right now. We will get through this and with BNI, we will be better
positioned than most to move on when it’s over.
On a personal note, I want to
give a big thank you to Graham Weihmiller (CEO of BNI). Graham saw this coming
before I did. He was looking around a corner. He was moving on putting BNI
Online in place before anyone thought it was necessary. I also need to thank the
full Global Support Team. We couldn’t have done it without them. I really look
forward to bringing most of the full team back when possible.
Lastly, I want to thank the
many Directors and Leadership Team members around the world who moved mountains
to get the 9,500 groups to the online platform. You are all to be commended.
So, this brings this podcast
to an end. Unless something changes, I intend to run a regular episode of the
Official BNI Podcast next week. We recorded a few before the COVID virus shut
things down and I’ve been holding them back to put out these special messages
to you. Next week’s topic is a perfect one for these days – it is all about
gratitude. As needed, I will record Special Episodes in the future.
